The holidays can be a stressful time. Cleaning for family. Cooking for family. Being around a family that you both love but have complicated feelings about. Maybe just having conflicting feelings about the holidays in general.
The complex revenge to be extracted after wrongs done the year before.
Well that last one may not be universal but it is a part of the plot for this movie.
Thanksgiving is a 2023 movie from the terrifying mind of Eli Roth. Roth has been in love with movies since the age of eight. Horror has been the genre that he mostly directs. He was the perfect person to take on this film with his love of gore and practical effects.
After a bloody and terrifying Black Friday incident the year before a small New England town finds itself in the middle of a killing spree. The killer seems to be targeting people involved, including a group of high school students. Can the local police find the killer before everyone is gathered around the table for the sweet dish of revenge?
This movie is an interesting one. I loved the use of practical effects. The scenery does a great job of helping tell the story. The music and lighting also are mvps from a horror standpoint. All of these come together to give an interesting take on a Thanksgiving horror story.

I did find it hard to root for the protagonists. Not that it is essential to do so. However it does help to keep me, as a viewer, more invested in the story if I care. Sometimes the villain just has the better motive in a horror movie.
Would I recommend Thanksgiving? Well. Yes, but with some conditions. If it is someone’s first horror movie I would not start them off with this one. It is VERY gory. However if you are a fan of gnarly kills then yah, totally. I did enjoy this movie, as a fan of the aforementioned.
This film is a great commentary on consumerism. It is funny, dark and a fun flick for between Halloween and Christmas horror movies.
So give it a shot. Enjoy and happy holidays, folks.
ALWAYS KEEP SPARKLING!!!
