Knowing the future is a dangerous thing. How could that knowledge it affect your current life? Change the decisions you make every day? Would you stop looking for love? Close yourself off from others? Not take any chances, just in case? These questions are a harsh reality for Blue Sargent.

The Raven Boys is the first book in a series by Maggie Stiefvater. First published in 2012 the book, and subsequent series, amassed a large fan base. It was no surprise with Stiefvater’s previous works popularity. Steifvater seems to capture the feeling of not belonging while spinning stories of the supernatural. She also has a talent for peppering romance without it taking away from the gravity of the main story. No one quite writes a misfit like her.

Blue has always lived her life on the periphery of the supernatural. Her mother and the women who surround her all have psychic talents, but she does not. Well not in the way most do. Blue is like a battery, powering those around her. Every year Blue sits next to her mother writing down the names of ghosts she cannot see. Blue does have something else that makes her special. A prophecy about the boy she will one day love.

Blue is driven to succeed. Her multiple jobs and grades prove that. She also has a strict rule to stay away from the Raven Boys, the rich boys who attend the prep school in town. However fate seems to have different plans when she waits on a group of them one night. Blue and the boys then are thrown into a wild tale of twists and supernatural turns.

The Raven Boys is a great start to one of my favorite book series. With multiple points of view it isn’t hard to find a character to identify with. Stiefvater’s writing style ranges from gut wrenching to lovely. Her characters are rich. Her settings are so detailed it is easy to imagine oneself there. Teenage angst easily mixes with supernatural shenanigans for a fantastic read.

I would highly recommend The Raven Boys as a book to enjoy this Halloween season!

ALWAYS KEEP SPARKLING!!!
