Staff Picks – The Underrated

This month we asked the Staff at Real Women of Gaming: “What’s your favorite movie that was slept on (didn’t get the attention it deserved)?” Here’s exactly what we thought!

1 & 2 – The Descent and Underwater

The Descent is just amazing. Fantastic story, amazing cast, beautiful and dark scenery. Underwater is great horror, and Kristen Stewart just did a fantastic job.” – Henry

3 – Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Atlantis: The Lost Empire. One of the very last 2D animation movies; a bust for Disney but not for me. I developed a couple of first crushes from that movie.” – ThanaVonHel

4 – Monica

Monica. Came out in 2022. Trace Lysette is a fucking powerhouse. Patricia Clarkson probably gave her best performance I’ve ever seen. No one knows about this movie. This was the trans woman’s narrative everyone should have seen. If it’s not already, it belongs in the Criterion Collection, and Emelia Perez belongs in the trash. Granted, there are more films depicting trans women’s experiences that are good. I’m just saying this should have been celebrated like Moonlight was.” – Murl

5 – Treasure Planet

Treasure Planet is one of my top three favorite Disney movies. It deserves to be remembered as a classic, not ‘the movie that helped kill hand-drawn animation at Disney.’” – iris_thekeyblademaster

6 – Strictly Ballroom

“Fun, campy, and over the top, but takes itself and its subject matter seriously in a delightful way. Early Baz Luhrmann film.” – Otter_Limits

7 – The Covenant

“A movie I REALLY enjoy without shame is The Covenant. This movie has everything. Mentions of the Salem Witchcraft Trials, fanfiction-esque shenanigans, magic, a fun soundtrack, and a super attractive cast!” – ThiatheBard

8 – The Losers

“I have a huge list, but I think the one I will go with is The Losers. Stacked cast that came out around the time The Expendables did, and it so did not get the attention it deserved and could have been an amazing series.” – KinkedNitemare

9 – Dredd

“I gotta go with Dredd. So simple and so good. Unfortunately, it likely suffered from bad marketing and Sylvester Stallone’s terrible Judge Dredd, leaving a dark cloud on the franchise.” – Solidos_PTP

10 – Speed Racer

Speed Racer! This movie brought the cartoon to life in so many ways, and the racing scenes were Matrix-level amazing.” – Jingo

11 – Oscar

“I can’t even tell you how I came across this movie in the first place, but I fell in love with it, and it is easily one of my favorite movies or comfort movies. With Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei, and Tim Curry, it’s full of faces you’ve probably seen before. It’s a comedy, doesn’t take any of itself seriously, and it’s just a good time. You might even learn some new words! 10/10 Favorite Sylvester Stallone movie.” – CrymsonPleasure

12 – The Bourne Legacy

“Jeremy Renner, as Aaron Cross, had some very big shoes to fill when stepping into the world of Jason Bourne. He absolutely nailed the emotional and physical parts of being a sleeper agent without a memory. Action was off the charts too! The movie felt like it was part of the same world, but different enough to separate itself from Matt Damon’s films.” – MartianKat

13 – Ghostbusters

“It’s hard to believe one of my all-time favorite movies was received so marketed so poorly and received so much (probably sexist) hatred. With a cast bursting with comedy superstars, Ghostbusters (2016) is action packed, tears-in-your-eyes funny, and incredibly validating for anyone who was once a weird little girl.” – Soliyra
