Only Murders in the Building: Season Two Review

True Crime as a hobby can be a polarizing thing. Why would a person choose to spend their time engaging in crime? Why would they think that they could solve it better than authorities? Does it mean that the person is interested because they want to commit crimes? That last question became a plot point in seasons two of Only Murders in the Building

Once again true crime fans can see themselves in, just hopefully not the murder suspect part, the show.

Only Murder in the Building season two premiered in 2022. Those who loved the first season tuned in eagerly. They hoped that the spark of the show would continue. The humor, the heart and the fun of the previous season. Thankfully, season two delivered.

Through the opening of a hidden door four people are looking through. An older man in a red sweater with glasses and a confused look knees in front. Behind him is an older man with a fancy purple scarf with his mouth open. A young woman with a yellow sweat is to his right looking over the first man's shoulder. There is a teenage girl with short brown hair leaning toward the opening.

After a wild twist our team of true crime podcasters have found themselves in the middle of a new murder at the end of season one. They start off being questioned by the police. It becomes clear that they will have to clear their own names, and what better way to do it then to podcast about it? It did work last season after all. As the team tries to solve the murder, and find lives without all the bloodshed, the story twists and turns. Who can they trust? How will they solve something that they are persons of interest in?

Find out on season two of Only Murders in the Building

I really enjoyed this season. Once again the crew really worked hard to tell the story. The music is quirky and filled with clues for the audience. After watching season one we understand what certain notes mean, whether the scene is supposed to be humorous or foreboding. The re-use of bits of the previous seasons’ score really helps the audience on this mysterious ride. The cinematography works perfectly to show viewers what the writers want them to see as the tale unfolds. Costumes continue to give us information on our favorite characters and the new faces, like when Mable cut her hair looking for a physical change from last season. Watch the costume changes carefully…they may give clues to the big twist at the end of the mystery this season!

The use of New York itself continues to be a great choice. It helps to tie the seasons together. Also finding new layers to the building helps emphasize the layers that the main characters still have to show. The backdrop of the city is familiar, almost like coming home despite the new season.

Left to right three people are standing in the forefront.
Martin Short (an older man in a fancy brown suit) looks excited. Steve Martin (an older man in a dark suit with a white shirt) has his hands in front of him looking thoughtful. Salena Gomez (a young woman in grey pants and a black sweater) has her arms crossed and looks concerned.

I also enjoyed the time they put into showing mental health again. In a show that could easily make fun of these touchy subjects, Only Murders in the Building handles them well, giving these parts of the story the time they deserve.

I highly recommend season two of Only Murders in the Building. It is a fun watch with a lot of depth.
