It is a trope universally acknowledged that a superhero will always go through a disabling event and overcome its impact on their life. From Barbara Gordon’s transformation into Oracle to Tony Stark’s creation of Iron Man we love these stories for the chutzpa and innovation of the characters. Like the superheroes themselves, these narrative arcs are beacons of hope for many of what could be.
From the outside looking in, it is easy to believe that everyone simply recovers by harnessing their new “super power” and we often operate under the misconception that once someone has left the hospital they have been healed. Recovery, however, is a process; one that we rarely see the full measure of unless we are the survivor.
For this year’s “Be Someone’s Superhero” event, the Real Women of Gaming are banding together to support our heroes who are recovering from Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI) by raising money for Same You. You can read survivor stories here, including that of the Mother of Dragons, Emilia Clarke, herself. Having joined this pantheon of bad-ass survivors, our very own Vanri the Rogue will be sharing her experience of stroke recovery during the event! Assemble with us on February 27th to fundraise for equal access to recovery resources, awareness campaigns, and more!
