Ballet is many things. It is a form of dance that began as court entertainment and has evolved as different cultures have made it their own. It’s history is full of beauty and also dark chapters. Young dancers at the mercy and whims of men with power. No protection from the abuse of their patrons. To some people now they are a joke. Delicate figures that flit upon a stage.

Ballerinas are incredible athletes. They dance difficult routines for hours. During their busiest months they have rehearsals, their own practice time and then the show itself. Some also teach to help supplement income. Ballet takes a toll on their bodies in the name of art. That is why I am glad that we are also starting to understand the strength required to be in ballet through specials, documentaries and even social media.

Pretty Lethal is a film about the strength of ballerinas in an extreme situation. It is directed by Vickey Jewson who has tackled many stories focused on the female narrative. The script was crafted by Kate Freund who has been writing since she was 14. Together with a cast of powerful actresses they made a horror movie about ballerinas.

Bones is struggling. She is a talented ballerina but lacks the funds of her own to excel in such an expensive form of dance. She and her troop have flown all the way across the world to be able to compete in a dance competition. After their bus breaks down the troop walks to a nearby inn. Instead of the hospitality the girls are hoping for there is only danger. Will Bones and the rest of the ballerinas be able escape?

Pretty Lethal is a gorgeous movie. I know that sounds odd for a gory horror movie but it is true. The settings are immersive and full of details. They really help the viewer feel like these girls are trapped half a world away from anything that is familiar to them. The costumes are magnificent, letting the audience know a little about the girls when they are in street clothes. From their religious views to socioeconomic background. The progression of their tutus throughout the movie show the girls coming together as a group to fight for their lives.

So much thought was put into shooting this movie. The camera angles are almost graceful. Panning gently through the dancing and the carnage alike. The settings are almost characters themselves, trapping our main characters–reminding them, and us, how far away from help they really are.

I strongly recommend Pretty Lethal. It is a fantastic horror movie, balancing gore and comedy almost seamlessly. The characters are well written with care. The dancing itself is a reason to watch.

I will warn you to please check your trigger warnings before viewing.

Always keep sparkling!!!
