What is it?

Forewarned is an Asymmetrical survival horror game where a team of archeologists raid ancient Egyptian tombs. Within the tomb is a Mejai, in spirit form at first. The archeologists must figure out which Mejai is in the tomb in order to get into the inner tomb and acquire the ancient artifact inside. Once the artifact is stolen, the Mejai materializes and the front door closes. The archeologists must find the switch to open the front door, which spawns in a random spot once the door closes, and escape before the Mejai finds them.

What do I think?

This game has so much potential. It’s still in early access, so it’s a work in progress, but what’s there is great. It has elements of Phasmophobia, in that you have to find evidence to figure out which Mejai resides in the tomb, it’s scary, and addicting.

The Egyptian imagery is not 100% historically accurate, but the atmosphere is sufficiently creepy. When the spirit of the Mejai is near, there’s a Dead by Daylight style heartbeat, which triggers my flight reflex, but as long as you’re moving, he can’t hurt you, so I find myself running around in circles in small areas just to pull a lever or get a gold pile.

Once you get the ancient artifact from the inner tomb the proverbial shit hits the fan. This is when it gets real. The Mejai becomes real, and he will kill you if he finds you. As of right now, there are only four Mejai, but I’m sure they’ll add more. Each Mejai has a special ability that can help or hurt you. For example, Decan has enhanced hearing, so you have to be really quiet in order to escape him. Necreph is sensitive to light, so you can’t use your flashlight or torch or even your head lamp.

I’ve put 9 hours in the game so far, but I plan to put in far more. I’m excited for future updates and for the finished project. I hope the developers see the potential in this game and keep working to improve it and polish it.

Do I recommend it?

Yes! Grab it on Steam now while it’s in Early Access, before the price goes up, and to provide the developers with feedback and funding toward the finished product. Oh, and hit me up in the Real Women of Gaming discord, and we can play together!
