We all love games. Video games give gamers a unique experience. Gamers can be the character or help the character as the game progresses. Sometimes we disagree with what the characters decide for these characters. Sometimes we find one who just deserved better.

Here is a list that some of our staff here at Real Women of Gaming think deserved better.

Iris_thekeyblademaster not only came up with this idea but had these examples: *cracks knuckles*

Okay. Let’s do this. First off, since we’ve got another Princess Peach game coming out, I feel compelled to ask Nintendo: when do we get to play a Legend of Zelda game that actually stars Zelda? She should get to be the hero of her own adventure game at least once.

Some others:

Sheva from Resident Evil 5: I’m sorry, Sheva, it’s not your fault that you ended up co-leading a mediocre RE game.

Maya Nguyen, the supposed close friend of Nancy Drew who got kidnapped in one game and then never showed up in the games again. She’s apparently a journalist, which could have made her an interesting support character when Nancy needs help doing research on cases, but it’s never happened.

Every New Character in the Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy. I was going to be more specific with Klavier Gavin, but eh, they’re all great characters who got screwed over in various ways.

cmdrjoop had this to add: Anders from Dragon Age. He was by no means perfect in the Awakening DLC but he was an interesting character who’d had a hard life. He only got better as he learned to trust and open up to you AND GOT A CAT!!

Then in Dragon Age 2 he’s become an untrusting fanatic. Which is understandable considering everything going on in the story, but he’s also very insensitive to your own plights, and does not handle it well at all if you turn down his advances. ALSO, FOR SOME REASON THEY DIDN’T LET HIM KEEP THE CAT?!

Which I guess explains why there’s no way to talk him out of his plans at the end of the game.  I’d probably be unreasonable too if I was forced to give up my best friend for no good reason.

Soliyra also had a case to plead:

You know, I can’t really think of anyone other than Zeld…actually, you know what?  I’ve got one.

Lucke from Potion Permit.

A video game screenshot with a light brown background, divided into two sections.  On the left is a pixel art image of a young boy with brown hair, brown skin, and blue eyes, wearing overalls and boots.  Below him is a completely full friendship bar with a yellow smiley face to its left.  Note that it is a smiley face and not a red heart.  On the right is text.  The heading is “Information.”  The block text reads “Lucke is Garret and Mercy’s Oldest child.  He is a diligent, hard-working man with a gentle demeanour, capable of any kind of manual labour.  He secretly has a deep passion for books.”

Lucke is the elder child of the couple who own the village farm, where the player can purchase cooking ingredients, and he should be allowed to get married. To me, the player character. He is very smart, loves books, and dabbles in engineering.  He is torn between wanting to go to university in the city and staying in Moonbury to help out with the farm.  Your first friendship event with him involves meeting on a scenic cliff at sunset to discuss books.  If that is not a perfect first date, I don’t know what is.  His mother is very concerned about his marriage prospects and frequently mentions this to the player.
“Great,” I thought when this happened in my playthrough, “I can definitely help with that.”

However, no, apparently I could not, because this character is not romanceable.  His friendship meter maxes out after two tiers and his story ends with him choosing not to go to the capital “for now.“ So, in other words, unresolved.  It felt like the writers started working on this character and his story and just never finished, with the consequence being that I did not participate in the romance mechanics of the game because who could possibly compete with my nerdy, skinny, farm boy?

There you have it, folks. Some characters who certainly deserved better in their games. Did we miss your pick? Let us know in the comments below.

ALWAYS KEEP SPARKLING!!!
